Mobile Health Unit Screening Clinics  Our mobile screening unit is the only one of its kind on the east coast. The mobile health unit is dispatched to more than 200 community locations annually to perform nearly 20,000 free glaucoma, hearing and vision tests for area residents, and has evolved into a–year-round program with an ever-increase in demand. Eyeglass Recycling Program Local Lions clubs within District 22-C collect old, unwanted eyeglasses for re-distribution to the poor in under-developed nations. Donated eyeglasses are shipped to a Lions Recycling Center in Falls Church, Virginia where they are sterilized, categorized by prescription and distributed to these countries. Francis J. Garner Memorial Fund The Francis J. Garner Memorial Endowment Fund, dedicated to sight restoration and blindness prevention, has as its goal, "To assist financially for eye medical treatment order to prevent blindness and/or regain sight for qualifying candidates." Diabetes Awareness Every year, thousands of Americans lose their sight due to complications of Diabetes, and many more are unaware that they are at risk for going blind. Half of the nation’s 14 million people with diabetes have diabetic eye disease, a leading cause of blindness in working-age America. Diabetic Retinopathy often has no early symptoms, and is only detectable through a comprehensive eye exam.
